About blood tests for lupus
Lupus displays many different symptoms depending on the person diagnosed and which part of the body it impacts. There's no cure, but symptoms can improve if treatment starts early.
Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA test) or Anti-DNA tests can provide an early indication for the presence of lupus, although it is not necessarily conclusive. An anti-phospholipid test is used to test for Hughes syndrome, which is an increased risk of blood clots.
Need to know
The three main symptoms of lupus are:
- joint pain and stiffness
- continued extreme tiredness even after rest
- skin rashes over the nose and cheeks
You may also experience:
- weight loss
- fever
- hair loss
- swollen glands
- sensitivity to light causing rashes on uncovered skin
- poor circulation in fingers and toes
There are simple procedures where your consultant takes a small sample of your blood. They will also ask you about your symptom and if you are taking any medication.
Lupus can be treated using:
- anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen
- anti-rheumatic medicines for fatigue and skin and joint problems
- steroid tablets, injections and creams for kidney inflammation and rashes
