Having a miscarriage

Losing a pregnancy can be a deeply personal experience that may affect you in a variety of ways.

Our expert team will not only perform the surgical management of your miscarriage but can offer you the support you need afterwards.

Need to know

This procedure involves removing the pregnancy from your uterus through your vagina. Your consultant will carefully open the entrance to your uterus wide enough for the pregnancy to be removed using a suction tube. An ultrasound may be done at the same time to reduce the risk of complications and ensure the pregnancy is fully removed. It is conducted under general anaesthetic, meaning you'll be asleep for the duration.
Your consultant will let you know how best to prepare for this procedure. You will have a chance to ask questions, and our team will be available to explain any part of the process at any stage.

An ERPC is usually performed as a day case, meaning you can go home on the same day, however it can take up to 24 hours to recover from the general anaesthetic. During this time you should have an adult with you and avoid driving or making any important decisions.

You can expect to have some vaginal bleeding for up to two weeks after the procedure. You are likely to experience cramps, similar to period pains, in your lower tummy after the operation. These should get milder over time but may last for up to a few days. Our nursing team will provide you with painkillers. You will also be put in touch with psychological support, if you feel you need it.
