Treatment for meningioma
This surgical procedure removes meninogiomas — a type of benign brain tumour that develops in the meninges (membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).
If left untreated, they can press on the brain, leading to a variety of symptoms depending on their location. The surgical treatment involves opening the skull by creating a bone window and removing the tumour.
About 99% of meningiomas are benign (non-cancerous), but there are three ‘grades’ that indicate the speed of tumour growth.
- Grade I is very slowly
- Grade II is more rapid but still benign
- Grade III (rare) is malignant.
Need to know
Your neurosurgeon will start by creating a window in your skull to access your brain. Depending on the location of your meninginoma (tumour), they'll then aim to remove it completely.
At the end of the procedure, the bone will be replaced and secured. The menginoma will be sent away to a pathologist to determine its grade, which will dictate if any additional therapy is required.
Your consultant will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. Because you'll be having general anaesthetic, they'll let you know how long you should avoid eating and drinking before surgery.
Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.
You will wake up in our theatre recovery and may then be transferred to the high dependency unit, where you'll be carefully monitored by our experienced team.
Your consultant will let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including work or exercise. If the meningioma is Grade II or Grade III, you may receive a course of radiotherapyto kill any remaining cells and stop the tumour from growing. Your consultant will discuss your treatment option in detail with you.
