The Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine Unit at The Portland Hospital offers both a consultant- and sonographer-led scanning service in a central London location. Using state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, you and your partner can share in the experience of seeing your baby grow and mark the milestones in their development as your pregnancy progresses.
Ultrasound scans are carried out at the different stages of your pregnancy to help assess the progress of your unborn baby as they develop in the womb. These scans and stages include:
Each scan you have at The Portland is incredibly exciting, as our sonographers provide you and your partner with important information such as your expected date of delivery and, if you wish to be told, your baby's gender. You will also be given copies of the ultrasound images from each scan to take home with you.
If you're looking for added reassurance during early pregnancy, we offer a range of ultrasound scans and antenatal screening tests to give you peace of mind at this exciting time in your life. Early pregnancy scans are carried out from six weeks gestation.
Our dedicated team of specialist sonographers and consultants will provide you with personalised care, addressing any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing, and helping you and your partner to make informed decisions about the next stages of your pregnancy.
Our maternity unit at The Portland Hospital offers pregnant mothers non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), including the Illumina VeriSeq NIPT solution, which can be carried out alongside your regular ultrasounds from 11.5–13 weeks gestation.
These simple, safe and accurate tests allow the measurement of fetal DNA in the mother's blood, and can be used to detect the most common chromosomal birth defects of Down’s Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, Patau Syndrome, Turners' Syndrome and Triploidy.
The tests can also be used in conjunction with Nuchal translucency, helping to reassure parents-to-be that there is a reduced chance of these major chromosomal abnormalities.
The Portland Hospital has partnered with the International Gene Clinic® to offer all who hope to become parents the most comprehensive private clinical genetics service in the UK.
Our multidisciplinary team of consultant physicians treat all patients on an individual basis, supporting pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for patients undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and fetal medicine genetics including pre-natal counselling, testing and diagnosis.
