Dr Wisam Alwan is a Consultant Dermatologist at the internationally renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, where he serves as Clinical Lead for Children’s Dermatology. He has extensive experience in managing a wide range of skin conditions in both adults and children, including eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, and skin infections, as well as conducting mole checks and skin cancer screening.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Alwan is an active researcher with a specialist interest in the skin microbiome and inflammatory skin diseases. His PhD, completed at King’s College London, explored the role of commensal skin bacteria in conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and was supported by the Medical Research Council, the British Association of Dermatologists, and the British Skin Foundation. His research has earned national recognition, including awards from the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Society of Investigative Dermatology. Dr Alwan has contributed to numerous clinical trials and published widely in respected journals, including Cell Host & Microbe and the British Journal of Dermatology. He is also committed to medical education, serving as an educational supervisor and holding a postgraduate qualification in clinical education.
