About

Mr Tanujan (Tan) Thangarajah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports injuries, shoulder and elbow conditions, and fractures of the upper limb. He holds a substantive NHS Consultant position at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), where he manages a tertiary referral practice involving complex cases from across the United Kingdom. His clinical practice includes arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, management of rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, degenerative joint disease, elbow pathology and upper limb trauma. He also provides expert second opinions in complex shoulder and sports-related conditions.

He graduated with honours from the University of Liverpool and completed specialist orthopaedic training in London on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotation in Stanmore. In addition to a master’s degree, he was awarded a research grant from the Royal College of Surgeons to undertake a PhD at University College London, focusing on biological strategies to improve healing following rotator cuff repair. His research has resulted in publications in international peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his work at national and international scientific meetings. He has received multiple academic awards and has served as a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Mr Thangarajah completed advanced shoulder and elbow fellowships at the University of Cambridge and at the University of Calgary in Canada. During these fellowships, he gained experience in the management of complex shoulder and elbow disorders and worked in centres treating elite and professional athletes. In addition to surgical management, he provides non-operative treatment where appropriate and works collaboratively with physiotherapy teams to support rehabilitation and recovery.

His clinical approach is based on detailed assessment, clear discussion of treatment options and individualised management planning, with decisions guided by diagnosis, functional requirements and patient-specific factors.
