Dr Protima Deb is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist based in London. She currently sees patients privately at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children. As well as her substantive consultant role in the NHS, she holds an honorary senior clinical lectureship at Queen Mary University.
She completed her medical degree at Imperial College London in 2002, where her passion for research flourished during her intercalated BSc in Haematology. Dr Deb completed her paediatric training in London, subsequently developing a special interest in Gastroenterology. This field appealed to her due to its rapid advancements and the extensive learning opportunities it offers. Her specialist field of interest is exploring the gut microbiota in childhood inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Deb is a self-confessed research enthusiast, and she balances her clinical and academic duties in addition to giving lectures about her work at national and international conferences.
She has specialist expertise of performing diagnostic endoscopy. Dr Deb is a JAG-accredited trainer in endoscopy.
Clinical Interests
She is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition as well as a member of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.
Paediatric gastroenterology captivates Dr Deb as it provides a balance between general paediatrics and specialised knowledge. It also allows her to perform practical procedures, including endoscopy, and to pursue her interest in academic research, which remains a driving passion.
Dr Deb's PhD thesis investigated the role of the microbiome in childhood Crohn's disease. She is deeply intrigued by the human microbiome and its connection to health and disease. One of her ambitions is to elucidate the role of gut bacteria in childhood inflammatory bowel disease and explore the potential of modulating the microbiota to achieve long-term disease-free remission in children with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis.
Her dedication to advancing the field of paediatric gastroenterology and her commitment to improving patient outcomes through research make Dr Deb a valuable asset to The Portland Hospital.
