Prashant Patel qualified in medicine in 1993 in India, training as a General Surgeon with a focus on pelvic surgery before moving to the UK in 1999. In 2002, he began cancer research, earning a PhD from the University of Birmingham on gene and immunotherapy for prostate cancer while training in urology. In 2010, he completed a fellowship in urological cancer surgery in Perth, Australia, gaining expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He holds professional registration in the UK, India, USA, and Australia, as well as Fellowship of the European Board of Urology.
Appointed in 2010 as Senior Lecturer in Urology at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Urological Surgeon at QE Hospital Birmingham, he combines academic and clinical work. He is a GMC-accredited trainer, FRCS (Urology) examiner, and national committee member for urology trainee selection. Internationally, he serves on European Urology panels, the French National Cancer Institute’s evaluation committee, and as Associate Editor in Genitourinary Oncology.
His research focuses on molecular markers, immunotherapy, and informatics, with over 100 publications. He leads multiple clinical trials, is theme lead for the Bladder Cancer Research Centre, and since 2019 has been Head of Department for University Hospitals Birmingham, serving over two million people.
