About

Tev Aho is a Consultant Urologist who has a specialist interest in treating men with bothersome urinary symptoms and with urinary retention due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). He is the most experienced Holmium Laser Enucleation Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeon in the UK, having performed more than 2,200 procedures. He is frequently invited to lecture on HoLEP in the UK and abroad, and has convened an annual HoLEP course at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge since 2005. He has demonstrated live laser prostate surgery (including the world’s first thulium laser enucleation of the prostate) to his peers on more than 30 occasions at conferences throughout the world and has published extensively on HoLEP in the urological literature.

Tev is also experienced in performing the Urolift, Rezum and Aquablation procedures which are other options for treating BPH. He enjoys helping men to think about what is important to them when considering treatment to improve quality of life by relieving catheter-dependent urinary retention or bothersome urinary symptoms. Once treatment priorities have been identified Tev takes the time necesaary to discuss what the most appropriate treatment option is depending on each individual's situation. In this way, he offers a comprehensive and truly bespoke service for men with urination issues.

Tev has been offering Urolift since 2015. With his own experience of treating men with Urolift and his background of extensive HoLEP experience, which includes doing HoLEP for men who have not had good outcomes from Urolift due to incorrect Urolift placement or their prostate not being the ideal size and/or shape for Urolift, Tev can advise on whether Urolift is likely to be effective for you or not.

Tev was one of the first 3 UK urologists to perform Aquablation in 2017 and was part of the first multinational group to investigate aquablation by participating in the widely published WATER Study.

Tev performed the first NHS Rezum procedures in Cambridgeshire in 2020 and is pleased to offer this novel treatment to men as a day-stay procedure both privately and in the NHS.

Tev moved from New Zealand to the UK to be the Clinical Fellow in Uro-oncology at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2003 and was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon there the following year.

Tev has been involved in HoLEP research from its earliest days. During his training in NZ, he spent a year learning HoLEP from the urologists who invented it, eventually introducing it at CUH in 2004 where it rapidly became, and remains, the treatment of choice for the majority of men seeking a surgical treatment for urinary symptoms or retention. CUH was one of the first centres in the UK to offer HoLEP.

Tev is committed to surgical training and was the founding President of the UK Holmium User Group (HUG). He designed and implemented the national HUG Training Programme for HoLEP (a model which is now used internationally) and has mentored many surgeons in HoLEP. He was the Urology Training Programme Director in the East of England for 5 years until 2014 and was then on the Urology Specialist Advisory Committee which is responsible for urological training in the UK for another 5 years.

His other specialist interest is the surgical treatment of kidney cancer, and he is one of the highest volume kidney surgeons in the UK, offering both laparoscopic and open kidney surgery. He also performs laparoscopic pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction.

Ouside of work and family Tev's interests include: Running marathons (Aiming to complete the 6 World Marathon Majors: London, Berlin, Chicago and New York completed to date), music and musicals (very eclectic tastes), attending music festivals and the Theatre, eating good food, drinking good wine and whiskey and enjoying good company.
