Mr Jonathan Lucas was appointed as consultant orthopaedic and spinal consultant to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals (GSTT) in 1999, then appointed as lead clinician for spinal surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Evelina London Children’s Hospital in 2006 and since 2019 is Head of Service for Paediatric Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery at the Evelina London Children's Hospital, GSTT and lead clinician for the Portland Scoliosis and Spinal Surgery Centre . His specialist interest is the management and surgery of Paedaitric and Young Adult Spinal Pathology, including surgery for scoliosis and kyphosis, spondlylolisthesis/spodylolysis, disc pathology with back and sciatic pain, paediatric spinal trauma, tumour, and infection/sepsis. pain. Mr Lucas has performed over 1058 paediatric scolisosis and kyphosis operations to date.
Qualifying from St Thomas` Hospital Medical School and London University, Mr Lucas gained the FRCS (Orth&Tr) in 1998, undertaking his Orthopaedic Training as part of the South-East Thames Higher Surgical Orthopaedic Training Program. He then undertook specialized Spinal Surgical Training as a Spinal Fellow at the Centre for Spinal Surgery, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, completing his spinal training as a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling fellowship to renowned centres in the USA. He was appointed to the staff as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon to Guys and St Thomas` NHS Foundation in October 1999 and has subsequently specialised further to be a dedicated Spinal Surgeon, becoming Lead Clinician for Spinal Surgery in 2006, and subsequently refining his specialism to the management of conditions of the paediatric and young adult spine. Mr Lucas has performed over 1058 scoliosis and kyphosis operations to date.
Mr Lucas is a keen teacher of both undergraduates and postgraduates being an MBBS Examiner and former Chairman of AO SPINE UK, Britsh Scoliosis Society Education Secretary. He has published widely within surgical peer-review literature and is the Editor of a major surgical textbook, Aird`s Companion to Surgery, pursuing a research interest within spinal surgery focusing on the management of paediatric spinal deformity and the prevention of complications.
