About

Mr. David McArthur is a Consultant Colorectal, General, and Laparoscopic Surgeon based in Birmingham. With a special focus on minimally invasive approaches, he is adept at using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of hernias, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, Mr. McArthur has expertise in advanced haemorrhoid treatments, such as Rafaelo, Exroid, and THD procedures. His practice also encompasses the management of benign anorectal conditions, including piles, anal fissures, anal fistulas, and pilonidal sinuses. He is a fully certified and JAG-accredited colonoscopist, offering both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy services.

A leading authority in the surgical management of advanced and recurrent rectal cancer, Mr. McArthur regularly handles referrals from across the UK and internationally. He completed his medical training with Honours in Surgery from the University of Birmingham, later receiving an MD from the University of Warwick for his groundbreaking research on colorectal cancer. His advanced training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Leeds developed his interest in managing complex cases of rectal cancer.

In 2011, Mr. McArthur was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and has continued his role at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust since 2018. He has been instrumental in advancing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and setting up the Midlands Advanced and Recurrent Rectal Cancer Unit (MARRCU) to provide specialised treatment for complex cases of rectal cancer.

Committed to education, Mr. McArthur has been actively involved in teaching and training throughout his career. Formerly a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham, he now serves as course director for the Royal College of Surgeons' "Strategies in Emergency General Surgery" and the ACPGBI "M42 Coloproctology for Junior Surgical Trainees" courses. He has published extensively in both national and international medical journals and has presented his work at numerous professional conferences. Since 2021, he has served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mr. McArthur established The Birmingham Colorectal Clinic to offer specialised care for colorectal and general surgical conditions. His goal is to provide a supportive environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their symptoms, and he offers a wide range of minimally invasive and surgical treatment options that are tailored to each patient’s individual needs.
