Miss Spanu is a Consultant General, Emergency, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, currently serving as the Clinical Lead of the Emergency General Surgery Department at North Middlesex University Hospital in London.
Miss Spanu obtained her General Surgery qualification in Barcelona, Spain, in 2006, after completing her residency at Barcelona Clinic Hospital. Her training encompasses General and Emergency Surgery, Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery (both upper and colorectal), and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery.
She further honed her skills through several fellowships in the UK at esteemed hospitals in London:
From 2006 to 2013, Miss Spanu worked as a Consultant General and Upper GI Laparoscopic Surgeon in Spain. Currently, she serves as a Consultant Surgeon at North Middlesex University Hospital, where she has dedicated significant efforts to developing the Emergency Surgery Unit. Her focus is on enhancing the quality and timely delivery of complex surgeries for urgent conditions, and implementing laparoscopic surgery for nearly all acute abdominal surgical conditions.
Miss Spanu possesses extensive experience in managing urgent and complex gallbladder and gallstone conditions, achieving excellent results in both urgent and elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies. She leads a renowned "hot gallbladder" surgery service at her hospital and has previously acted as the Clinical Lead for Acute Gallbladder Surgery for North Middlesex Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, and Barnet Hospital in London.
Her areas of special interest include General Surgery, Upper GI benign biliary pathology, and Laparoscopic Surgery. She is also experienced in all abdominal hernia repairs, including laparoscopic and complex abdominal wall reconstruction, as well as benign perianal conditions like hemorrhoids, skin lesions, and lipomas.
Miss Spanu is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for women with general surgical conditions, working closely with a team of anesthetists and nurses for select cases.
Committed to continuous learning, Miss Spanu focuses on training future surgeons in the UK and abroad. She serves as an educational and clinical supervisor for University College London, training one specialist trainee annually. Additionally, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at St. George’s University, Grenada, affiliated with NMUH, London.
