Mr James Barnes is a Consultant General Surgeon with a focus on renal transplantation, advanced vascular access for dialysis, and parathyroid surgery. He offers private consultations at The Harborne Hospital and undertakes NHS practice at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
He began his academic journey with a BSc from the University of Nottingham in 2003, followed by a medical degree from Warwick Medical School in 2007. He completed his surgical training in the West Midlands and undertook a 3 year Clinical Research Fellowship at the Oxford Transplant Centre, where he received specialised training in transplantation. His research during this time led to a DPhil from the University of Oxford, focusing on monitoring grafts after pancreas transplantation.
Mr Barnes’ clinical expertise includes challenging parathyroid cases such as repeat surgery, renal-related hyperparathyroidism, and conditions linked to multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN). He also specialises in living donor kidney transplantation and performs nephrectomies for non-donor cases such as polycystic kidney disease. Additionally, he is skilled in vascular access procedures for dialysis patients including routine AV fistulas as well as more complex transposition and AV graft procedures.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and actively participates in several professional bodies, including the British Transplantation Society, the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, and the Vascular Access Society of Britain and Ireland. Mr Barnes continues to contribute to research, education, and the advancement of surgical training across the UK.
