About
Dr Sarmed Sami is a leading Consultant Gastroenterologist based at University College London (UCL) Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL. The UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences is ranked #1 in London for Medicine and #10 in the world. The UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences is ranked as 10th in the world, and 1st in the UK.
Dr Sami obtained his medical degree in 2003 from the University of Baghdad, Iraq. Following this, he undertook specialty training in both the UK and the USA, at a number of centres of excellence. This included an advanced gastroenterology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota which was recently ranked as the #1 hospital in the world! which has been ranked, for the sixth consecutive year, as the No. 1 "Best Hospital" nationwide by the U.S. News & World Report in its 2021-2022 "Best Hospitals" rankings. Dr Sami was also awarded a PhD from the University of Nottingham, through the completion of a National Endoscopy Research Fellowship. Following successful completion of a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education, he has taken up numerous educational roles, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. What's more, he has also served as a faculty member and speaker on multiple national and international workshops and teaching courses.
Dr Sami is the founder and director of Digestive Health UK, a collaborative group of expert doctors and leaders specialising in gastroenterology and its related specialties. Based in central London, the mission of Digestive Health UK is to offer a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to patients’ care and empower patients through education.
When it comes to research, education and clinical care for patients, Dr Sami holds an exemplary track record. As a result of this, he has been rewarded with several distinguished awards, including the Trainees Out of Programme Award from the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), the Cook Medical Marsha Dreyer Award from the American Society for GI Endoscopy (ASGE) and, more recently, a Fellows-in-Training award from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). He has also widely published in the field of gastoenterology, as the author and co-author of over 40 publications and research abstracts, which includes the current UK guidelines on oesophageal dilatation.
