Dr Iyad Ismail is a Respiratory Consultant and has worked at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust since 2015. During that time, he has thrived to introduce innovative practice in respiratory medicine. He is the Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull (HGS) Lung Cancer Lead, focusing on patient outcomes from early diagnosis to treatment.
Dr Ismail manages general respiratory conditions including cough, breathlessness, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, respiratory failure and obstructive sleep apnoea as well as large airway disease; tracheobronchomalacia and excessive dynamic airway collapse (TBM/EDAC). He has a specialist interest in pleural disease as well as large airway disease; Tracheobronchomalacia and excessive dynamic airway collapse (TBM/EDAC), these conditions can sometimes be misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD - which would be treated differently.
The treatments Dr Ismail provides includes: thoracic ultrasound, bronchoscopy, end-bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) pleural aspiration (diagnostic and therapeutic), an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) and intercostal chest drain.
Dr Ismail graduated from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2000 and was awarded a merit scholarship throughout medical school by the United Nations (UNRWA). He completed his training in the UK (CCT) in respiratory and general medicine in 2014. He complimented the training with a fellowship in interventional procedures from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Dr Ismail is actively involved in research related to lung cancer and pleural disease, this further helps to provide evidence-based practice, which benefits patient outcomes.
Dr Ismail now practices as a respiratory consultant at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, having worked within the trust since 2015. Since joining the Trust, he has strived to introduce innovative practice in respiratory medicine. He is the Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull (HGS) Lung Cancer Lead, focusing on patient outcomes from early diagnosis to treatment.
