About
Specialising in children’s orthopaedic conditions, Benan is a fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in London and the home counties. He runs a busy specialist paediatric practice for all ages with extensive experience in managing infants, toddlers and adolescent children. He deals with all aspects of children’s injuries from minor sports injuries to complex neuromuscular conditions.
Benan underwent all his undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in London. He completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in London on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Rotation and worked at Major Trauma Centres in both London and Melbourne.
After completing his orthopaedic training in London, he went on to complete two internationally recognised paediatric fellowships where he worked at two leading centres for paediatric orthopaedic surgery, Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Alongside his surgical training he completed a MSc in Musculoskeletal Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education both at University College London. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons and the Higher Education Academy. In addition to his clinical practice Benan continues to be heavily involved in research and teaching. He has published widely in international peer reviewed scientific journals. He regularly presents at national and international paediatric, orthopaedic and sports conferences. Benan formally teaches, lectures, mentors and invigilates medical students, doctors and surgeons in London and Oxford.
Benan has a holistic approach to his clinical practice and strives to achieve the best possible outcome for his patients by fully engaging with the families throughout the decision process, providing them with all the possible treatment options with an emphasis on non-operative treatment where possible.
A sports enthusiast outside of work, he played rugby, cricket and squash to university level and represented both the Royal College of Surgeons and United Hospitals. He still regularly runs half and the occasional full marathon. Benan understands how sports injuries can impact a person’s quality of life and the importance of working together with the patient, their family and other multidisciplinary teams to guide the patient on their path to recovery.
Benan leads the paediatric service in Milton Keynes University Hospital and holds an Honorary Consultant appointment at Oxford University Hospital. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), Higher Academy of Education (HEA) and Paediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). He has been on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery since 2017 and been appointed as a surgical tutor for Oxford University.
