Mr. Alfredo Tonsi is a highly regarded Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, specialising in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, and benign proctological conditions, which include complex anal fistula, haemorrhoids, anal pain, and rectal prolapse. His surgical repertoire encompasses both laparoscopic and open abdominal wall hernia procedures, including those for inguinal hernias.
During his training he embarked on a scientific collaboration with the Hepatobiliary Department of University of Verona, Italy which led to a PhD awarded in 2012.Publications from the thesis include association of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and primary duodenal cancer.
Mr Tonsi has performed over 4000 general and colorectal surgical procedures including laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, laparoscopic anterior resection, complex anal fistulae repair, and abdominal wall hernias. He is also national trainer on colonoscopy accredited by the JAG Endoscopy Training System.
As colorectal surgeon, he was part of the Royal Derby Endometriosis Centre team which achieved the status of accredited unit from the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy in 2021. He is also a member of the European Endometriosis League. He is the Surgical IBD lead at Royal County Sussex Hospital where he works in close contact with the IBD dietician team and gastroenterology colleagues in order to optimise Crohn’s patients prior to their surgery.
Mr Tonsi is an Honorary Senior Lecture at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. At present he is enrolled on an online course to achieve a Diploma in Football Medicine supported by FIFA medical network.
