Mr. Jonathan J.R. Richardson is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based in the West Midlands. He graduated with honours from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2005 and completed comprehensive training in general and colorectal surgery across the region.
Mr. Richardson specialises in colorectal cancer surgery, with expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques and complex resections for advanced disease. He is a high-volume colorectal cancer surgeon, known for excellent patient outcomes. He plays an integral role in the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and leads the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme. Additionally, he serves as Audit Lead for the Surgical Directorate, focused on improving patient care standards.
An accomplished clinical researcher, Mr. Richardson holds an MD from the University of Birmingham. His translational research on neutrophil function in colorectal cancer surgery earned the European Society for Surgical Research Best Clinical Research Award. He remains actively involved in NIHR portfolio studies and contributes widely to academic literature.
Committed to education, Mr. Richardson holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He is Lead Undergraduate Surgical Tutor, Senior Clinical Examiner, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Birmingham. He supervises trainees and leads teaching courses for the Royal College of Surgeons.
Outside work, he enjoys family life with his wife and six children, and stays active through running, swimming, and football coaching.
