About The Portland Scoliosis and Spinal Surgery Centre

At The Portland Scoliosis and Spinal Surgery Centre, we take great pride in being the only dedicated paediatric and young adult private spinal and scoliosis unit in the UK.

Based at The Portland Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, our surgeons are supported by an expert multidisciplinary team of paediatricians, specialist spinal nurses, physiotherapists, anaesthetists, orthotists and play therapy specialists.

Together they offer integrated surgical and non-surgical care for young patients experiencing the full range of spinal problems, spanning from recurring sports and trauma injuries, congenital and developmental scoliosis, and all other paediatric spinal pathologies.

Why Choose The Portland Scoliosis and Spinal Surgery Centre?

Consultant Mr Mark Harris talks about this unique centre and how consultant and healthcare professionals work closely together to help diagnose and manage scoliosis and spinal conditions.

Individually tailored treatments

We offer the full breadth of treatment to paediatric patients with spinal conditions and scoliosis, covering all aspects of surgical and non-surgical care.

Our multidisciplinary approach represents the gold standard of care in the management of complex paediatric spinal conditions. It gives patients and their families confidence in their decision making, on if and when, they should have surgery and what surgery is best for them.

Surgical management of spinal conditions and scoliosis

Our four consultant surgeons are all highly specialised in paediatric spinal surgery and care for children from birth to adulthood and beyond. Their practice includes the treatment of:

• Congenital scoliosis

• Kyphosis

• Early onset scoliosis

• Idiopathic scoliosis

• Neuromuscular / syndromic spinal deformity

• Spondylolisthesis

Dual consultant operating

Our surgeons offer dual consultant operating as standard, knowing that this provides optimised surgical times and reduces complications and hospital length of stay. We offer combined speciality surgery with neurosurgical and vascular support for added safety and breadth of surgical options.

Our specialists meet regularly, as part of an established Multidisiplinary Team (MDT) meeting, to discuss our paediatric patients’ cases in depth, ensuring each individual benefits from optimal treatment tailored to their specific needs.

Non-surgical management of spinal conditions and scoliosis

We offer the full breadth of treatment to paediatric patients with spinal conditions and scoliosis, covering all aspects of non-surgical conservative physiotherapy and bracing programmes.

Our dedicated physiotherapy and orthotics service includes conservative programmes, managed by our highly experienced physiotherapists and orthotists who tailor all treatments to individual patients.

Orthotic programmes

Orthotic intervention and spinal bracing provides conservative treatment options for the management of a range of spinal conditions, including:

• Early onset scoliosis

• Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

• Neuromuscular scoliosis – including cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, spinal muscular atrophy, muscular dystrophy, Friedreich’s ataxia

• Idiopathic and Scheuermann’s kyphosis

• Syndromic scoliosis

• Spinal trauma or injury

Bracing for scoliosis

We offer bracing as a treatment option to young patients with spinal curves that measure between 25º and 40º whilst they are still growing.

The brace is used as both a management technique to stop the curve from getting bigger.

Experienced therapy teams

Our dedicated physiotherapists and orthotists tailor all treatments to individual patients.

We have all the necessary specialist facilities for on-site physiotherapy, bracing and orthotic

A life-changing procedure

When Mr Lucas diagnosed Hattie as having severe spinal scoliosis, it was clear major corrective surgery would be required. Here Hattie's parents help share her story from diagnosis through to treatment and recovery.

Julie's scoliosis journey

Having been diagnosed with epilepsy, cerebral palsy and scoliosis at a very young age, Julie's case was more complex than most. Here, Julie's parents talk about their journey and life after surgery.
