Neonatal intensive care for premature and unwell newborns
If your new baby is born prematurely or is unwell, we understand that it can be an especially worrying time for you and your family. You naturally want to ensure that your baby is in the safest hands and receiving the higher level of care that they are likely to need. Our consultant team of neonatologists and neonatal nurses offer unparalleled expertise and are ready to monitor and care for your newborn at our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at The Portland Hospital in London.
If your baby is born within the NHS and needs neonatal services, we can arrange for your child to be transferred to our care.
What is neonatal care?
This specialist care is given to newborn babies needing extra support and, possibly, clinical intervention. The medical term neonatal means ‘newborn’ and it technically describes the first 28 days of a baby’s life, although our services extend to newborn babies well beyond that time frame.
Why does my baby need intensive neonatal care?
Most newborns admitted to our unit are premature, born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, have low birth weight or have a medical condition that requires intensive care.
As your baby grows and needs less medical support, they can be moved to our special care baby unit. For the sake of continuity and the best clinical outcomes, the same neonatal nurses will care for your baby across both locations.
