Transrectal or transperineal prostate biopsy

ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PROSTATE BIOPSIES

A prostate biopsy involves taking tissue from the prostate and checking it for cancer

Enquiries & Appointments

What is a prostate biopsy?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Using ultrasound technology, we can do a biopsy (take samples of prostate tissue and send it for analysis) to find out if you have cancer and if it is likely to spread.

We offer two types of biopsy:

  • transrectal
  • transperineal

Need to know

For a transrectal biopsy, we'll put an ultrasound probe into your rectum (back passage) to scan your prostate. We'll then pass a special needle through the probe to take 10 to 18 tissue samples. A transrectal biopsy is normally done under a local anesthetic, which means we'll numb the area around your prostate. Occasionally, it may be carried out under a general anaesthetic.

For a transperineal biopsy, we'll do the same, but we'll pass the needle through your perineum (the skin between your scrotum and rectum). We'll take 24 to 54 samples. A transperineal biopsy is normally done under a general anaesthetic.
Your consultant will review your medical history and medications on the day of your procedure. They'll also explain the procedure itself. We may provide you with anti-embolism stockings, which help to prevent blood clots from passing into your lungs.

Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.
Your consultant will let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including work or exercise.
