What is plastic surgery?
Plastic surgery is the medical specialty dedicated to improving or restoring the appearance and/or function of a part of the body.
It's made up of two areas:
- Cosmetic surgery: Cosmetic procedures are carried out for aesthetic reasons and include aspects like face lifts and nose reshaping.
- Reconstructive surgery: Reconstructive surgery is usually carried out after a serious injury, cancer treatment or if a child is born with a cleft palate, genetic disorder or an abnormality in their skull
No matter what type of plastic surgery you have or why, when you're one of our patients you'll be treated by some of the most talented plastic surgeons around. They take their time to understand your motivations and talk to you about what to expect. They use the most up-to-date technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques to keep scarring to a minimum and achieve natural results.

Need to know
Breast enlargement is a common type of cosmetic surgery where silicone or saline implants are inserted to increase breast size, make them more even or change their shape. The implants are placed either between the breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind the muscle.
If you feel your breasts are too big, it can be difficult to live with and affect your confidence. It can limit the clothes you can wear and the sports you do, along with causing shoulder and back pain. Breast reduction surgery is an operation to remove breast tissue to decrease breast size. It can...
If you're unhappy with your nose - whether it's for cosmetic reasons or you've been injured - nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) could help. This surgical procedure can enhance, reduce or refine the shape and size of your nose so you feel more confident. It may also help with breathing problems.
Microsurgery is a specialised surgical discipline involving the use of microscope magnification to perform intricate operations. Microsurgical procedures range from reattaching a finger to transplanting bone or muscle to restoring facial features or reconstructing breast tissue following a mastectomy.
Common skin lesions include moles, freckles, birthmarks, cysts, warts and skin tags. Although they're usually harmless (benign), you may have a lesion removed for cosmetic reasons or as a precaution against skin cancer. You may also have a skin lesion removed to diagnose or treat skin cancer.
Craniofacial reconstruction surgery can improve or correct a range of deformities of the skull as well as damage caused by trauma to the head or face. Our multidisciplinary teams of surgeons will work together to rebuild tissue, facial features and bone structure to achieve the best cosmetic result.
Breasts can sag over time due to ageing, weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding. This is because the fibrous bands that support the breast stretch and break down. Breast lift surgery, which is also known as a mastopexy, can help to reshape the breasts into a more youthful, firmer shape.
A breast reconstruction is usually offered to all women who've had a lump, or one or both breasts removed due to breast cancer. The timing of the surgery depends on how early your breast cancer is detected and treated. It can either happen at the same time as your breast removal or a later date.
Sometimes, it takes more than exercise and a healthy diet to lose body fat - especially on the hips, thighs and stomach. Liposuction removes unwanted body fat to help give you the shape you want. It isn't a treatment for cellulite or obesity. Rather, it works best on people who aren't overweight.
Cheek and chin implants, and fat transfer (lipomodelling) can plump up your cheeks and chin to create a more youthful appearance and defined profile. Chin remodelling refines the shape and size of your chin. All these treatments can help balance the proportions of your face.
Facial reanimation surgery can help restore voluntary movement to your face. It can recreate a symmetrical smile in those suffering from facial palsy (paralysis). Surgery may be used along with other treatments but may not be able to restore nerve function in your face.
As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and tone. This can cause the skin along the jawline, neck and lower part of the face to sag. A facelift can help restore definition and improve the appearance of lines by repositioning your skin and removing or redistributing any excess skin and fat. There are...
Eyelid surgery removes excess fat, muscle and skin from the upper and lower eyelids to help give a more youthful, bright-eyed appearance. At HCA UK our specialists offer bilateral blepharoplasty which means we treat your upper and lower eyelids as part of the same procedure. The surgery can be done...
If you have a scar caused by an injury or a previous surgery, revision treatment can minimise the appearance of old and new scar tissue – including keloid scars, contractures and facial scars. Depending on the size and location of your scar, your consultant will recommend the best treatment for you.
If you're unhappy with the shape of your nose or septum, we offer surgical treatment options which can help. Rhinoplasty: If you're unhappy with your nose, whether it's for cosmetic reasons or if you've been injured, HCA UK nose reshaping could help. This surgical procedure can enhance, reduce...
