Your guide to hand and wrist conditions and treatment

No matter what stage of life you’re at, or what your occupation, your hands are always in use. We don’t often consider the dexterity needed for precise movements and, although it’s the vital connection joint between our hands and forearms, many of us take our wrists for granted. Both the hand and wrist are highly complex structures, full of tendons, ligaments, and bones, and when something goes wrong, the impact can be enormous.

Whether you’ve experienced a sudden injury or are suffering with wear and tear from overuse, we can help restore the vital mobility, strength and function in your hand and wrist. Our specialists have pioneered many advanced surgical techniques for a wide range of conditions affecting the hand and wrist, including peripheral nerve compressions (carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome), Dupuytren's disease, trigger fingers and thumbs, and arthritis affecting the joints of the hand and wrist.

Common hand and wrist conditions

Hand and wrist arthritis

This is a common condition that can affect people of all ages, causing pain and inflammation in the joints in the hand and wrist.

Dupuytren's disease

This condition is caused by a build-up of thick fibrous tissue in the palm of the hand. It leads to a progressive deformity, where one or more fingers bend into the palm.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

A condition where pressure on a nerve in the wrist impacts control of movement in both the wrist and hand, often accompanied by a tingling sensation, numbness and pain.

Common hand and wrist treatments

Ganglion cyst removal

A ganglion cyst is a bump on the fingers or wrist. While benign, it can cause pain and restrict movement. Treatment can include draining the cyst or surgery to remove the tissue if it persists.

Trigger finger release

Otherwise known as stenosing tenosynovitis, this condition causes your finger or thumb to lock. If steroid injections fail to treat the condition, a small operation can help.

Small joint replacement surgery

When arthritis affects your knuckles or the base of your thumb, surgery to replace your joint with an artificial one can prove an effective solution to relieve pain and restore movement and function.
