At The Portland Hospital, we understand that entrusting us with your child’s care is a big decision. From our expert consultants and paediatric doctors, through to our nurse and clinical specialists, we’re all here to ensure your child gets the very best care and treatment in a safe, nurturing environment.
The Portland Hospital has been commended by the Care Quality Commission for its patient-centred care and compassionate staff.
We have teams of expert paediatric doctors on-site at all times, alongside experienced clinical support staff, to ensure your child has round-the-clock care. We also have state-of-the-art facilities for the most complex care, including a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and a high dependency unit (HDU).
We care for more than 40,000 babies, children and young people every year, routinely performing complex surgeries and procedures. We regularly revisit and update our strict safeguarding measures, including strict infection control measures, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our patients and visitors.
Everything we do at The Portland Hospital is in accordance with the strict clinical governance that guides our policies and procedures.
We understand that a hospital visit can be a stressful time for children – and their parents, too.
And while excellent clinical care is always our priority, we also understand the big impact the little details can have on your child during their time with us.
It’s why we go out of our way to make their stay as comfortable as possible. Our children's inpatient units were designed with young people in mind from the start, with bright, spacious playrooms packed with books, toys, art materials and audio-visual equipment.
If you’re a parent or carer and want to stay overnight with your child, that’s no problem at all – just let us know and we’ll do the rest.
We recognise how anxious an overnight stay can be for both children and their loved ones. In the PICU, a comfortable chair will be provided by your child’s bedside so you can be right next to them. Where we have capacity, we are able to arrange a hospital room outside of PICU where you can sleep on-site comfortably.
For children admitted to our inpatient wards, parents will be able to stay overnight and we’ll ensure a bed is put next to your child’s in their room.
You’ll have privacy whenever you want it, with en-suite rooms and 24-hour room service, and our flexible visiting hours mean you can spend time together with the wider family, just as you would at home.

Worried about your child, but not sure what to do?
Have a referral and need to book?
Unsure of a diagnosis and need some answers?
As well as wanting your child to feel happy and secure, we want to make sure we help you feel prepared and confident in your choice. Part of that is making sure you have all the information you need before you come to see us.
If you can’t find the information you need, get in touch and a member of our team will do their very best to help.
If your child is coming for tests or treatment, but doesn’t need to stay overnight, then you’ll need to go to our children’s outpatient department.
Your consultant will talk to you beforehand about how best to prepare your child for their visit. They’ll also let you know what time to arrive and what to bring with you, including suitable clothes and shoes for your child to wear.
If you have any questions before your visit, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. A member of our team will be happy to help.
During surgery, your child’s anaesthetist will monitor their blood pressure, pulse, temperature and breathing, to make sure they’re safe and comfortable throughout the procedure.
When the operation is finished, your child will be taken to a recovery room where they'll be cared for by our expert team as they wake up from the anaesthetic.
We'll do everything we can to provide a comfortable and reassuring 'home-away-from-home' environment for your child.
Our child-friendly rooms have almost everything you’ll need including an en suite bathroom, a nurse call system, a direct dial phone, a TV, a fridge, air conditioning – even space for a parent or carer to stay overnight if they’d like to.
What the rooms don’t have is your child’s favourite toy or comforter, so if you’d like to bring that with you, please do (and don’t forget nightwear and toiletries for them as well).
And, to make sure we cater to as many tastes as possible, your child will have their choice of meals from our dedicated children's menus.
For many parents, time seems to pass slowly while their child’s having an operation. We understand, and so have provided a couple of suggestions for those who find the wait difficult.
You can return to your child's room with the nurse. Once there you can order some refreshments, read, contact relatives and wait for your child to return from theatre.
If you’d rather get some air, that’s fine too. If you do go for a walk, we ask that you leave your mobile contact number with the nurses so they can reach you if we need to.
