What happens during an ECG? icon plus
An ECG is a quick and painless test. You'll be asked to lie on a bed while several sensors are attached to your chest, wrists and ankles using small sticky pads. These sensors are connected to a machine that tracks and records the electrical signals that control your heart beat. It usually takes around five minutes to record this information and complete the test. -
How to prepare for an ECG icon plus
Your consultant or physiologist will explain the test to you and answer any questions you may have. Usually there isn't any special preparation needed for an ECG. -
After an ECG icon plus
The test itself isn't painful, and you'll be able to go home right after your appointment. Your consultant will discuss your results with you and let you know about any next steps, including further tests if needed.
