An endoscopy is a procedure to examine inside your body using an instrument called an endoscope. An endoscope is a long, thin flexible tube with a light and video camera at the end. An endoscopy can be used as a diagnostic procedure to investigate symptoms or to carry out some types of procedures or taking tissue samples (biopsy).
Depending on what type of procedure you're having, the endoscope can be inserted into your body through the mouth or anus. The name of the procedure you have depends on which part of your body is examined. For example, a gastroscopy looks at part of your digestive system, such as your stomach and small intestine.
Your consultant may suggest an endoscopy if you are experiencing symptoms including abdominal bloating and pain, change of bowel habit, constipation, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, indigestion, rectal pain and bleeding.
