Miss Theodora Pissanou is a consultant surgeon specialising in sarcoma surgery, segmental liver transplantation, and hepatobiliary diseases. She was the first woman in the UK to become a consultant surgeon in liver transplantation.
She has specialised in many areas of liver surgery, including hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases, liver adenomas, gallstone disease, laparoscopic surgery, complex hernia surgery, and emergency surgery. Due to this, she has gained significant medical experience and skills.
Miss Pissanou gained her medical qualification from Semmelweis University in Budapest in 1996, before undertaking her general surgery training at the University of Athens in 2004.
She later relocated to the United Kingdom, where she received training in HPB, liver transplantation, and sarcoma surgery at a number of hospitals, including Birmingham and Newcastle. She also trained at The Royal Free Hospital in London, where she joined as a consultant surgeon in the Sheila Sherlock Liver Unit in 2011.
Her primary areas of research include organ preservation for transplantation and liver regeneration. She is also passionate about encouraging organ donation and promoting live donor liver transplantation in the UK. She is an active member of various scientific surgical societies, including the IHPBA, ILTS, ESOT, and BTS.
