Miss Vivian A. Elwell is a consultant neurosurgeon with expertise in complex spinal surgery. She treats common neurological problems such as back pain, neck pain, slipped or herniated discs, spinal decompression, carpal tunnel syndrome, and sciatica. Miss Elwell began her undergraduate studies at Columbia College, Columbia University (NYC, USA) with a degree in Biological Sciences and completed her medical degree at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College School of Medicine. She completed her neurosurgical training on the North Thames Neurosurgical London Rotation and gained further specialist training in complex spinal surgery as a Central London Senior Spinal Fellow. She has received the British Association of Spinal Surgeons President Travelling Fellowship and the International Group for Advancement in Spinal Science Fellowship (IGASS). Miss Elwell is also involved in medical education and is an author of five medical textbooks, including "Neurosurgery: The Essential Guide to the Oral and Clinical Neurosurgical Exam" (2nd Edition, 2023). Her research includes head and spinal injury, spinal degenerative disease, and spinal tumours. In 2023, she was appointed as an External Examiner for Imperial College School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include minimally invasive spinal surgery, complex spinal surgery, discectomy, spinal decompression, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs, slipped discs, lower back pain, neck pain, spine fractures and trauma, spinal deformity, spine tumours and infections, sciatica, ulnar nerve compression, median nerve compression, and neurotrauma.
