Dr Hoare trained at Cambridge University and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1993. He undertook a PhD as an MRC research fellow in molecular biology from 1998 until 2001. His clinical gastroenterology training included a prolonged attachment at St Mark’s Hospital where he was the first Fujinon Advanced Endoscopy Fellow, before being appointed as consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College in 2006.
With over 15 years consultant experience Dr Hoare has wide interests and experience in all aspects of gastroenterology. His emphasis is on accurate and thorough investigation coupled with a holistic approach to therapy. Dr Hoare was Head of Endoscopy at St Mary's and Imperial College Hospitals for 11 years and has held regional positions of leadsership.
Specialist endoscopic interests include the detection and treatment of early cancer in the gut, including the management of Barrett’s oesophagus and colonic polyps. He has a specific interest in investigating and treating the small bowel by video capsule endoscopy and “balloon enteroscopy”, as well as a specialist interest in swallowing and complex oesophageal disorders.
Dr Hoare is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Academic Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College. His work on colonoscopy insertion technique was awarded the “Marsha Dreyer” research award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in 2015. He was the senior author of the BSG National Guideline for Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding in 2019 and has published over 35 peer reviewed research papers on endoscopy and other aspects of gastroenterology
