About
Named as one of the world’s leading robotic surgeons by BBC’s Horizon, Mr Chris Ogden is a consultant uro-oncologist at The Harley Street Clinic and The Princess Grace Hospital, both part of HCA Healthcare UK. Mr Ogden is an experienced, high-volume surgeon, and a pioneer in the field of robotic surgery. He performed the first (private) robotic surgery in the UK, and has since carried out thousands of robotically assisted procedures. He was the first consultant in the country to perform transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) of the prostate, and remains one of the few in the world currently able to carry out this procedure.
TPLA is a micro-invasive treatment and presents a unique offering for patients – a day case, low- risk procedure with excellent outcomes. Presenting at the BAUS international congress in 2023, Mr Ogden and his colleagues from The Princess Grace Hospital, were able to share their results, which show a wide range of real benefit to patients and no complications.
Mr Ogden also offers transrectal ultrasounds (TRUS), a highly accurate and time-saving procedure that delivers rapid assessment and diagnosis of non-cancerous prostate disorders such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Offering accurate insight into the size and shape of the gland, along with any signs of prostatitis, the test is particularly helpful for assessing the suitability of the vast range of treatment options available, including TPLA.
As part of the team at The Princess Grace Hospital, Mr Ogden continues to set, rather than follow, the pace. Along with Dr Jihad Kaouk of the USA-based Cleveland Clinic, he carried out Europe’s first radical robotic perineal prostatectomy, and has since worked in close partnership with the NHS, to develop this approach. Recent outcomes for this procedure have been reviewed at the highest academic level at University College London Hospitals, which showed positive surgical margins equivalent to the standard procedure and no significant complications.
One of the first urologists to use the ground-breaking high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment, Mr Ogden was also the first in the world to assess and present the comparisons between whole gland HIFU and robotic surgery. He also co-authored a paper on the outcomes of focal HIFU for prostate cancer which was accepted for publication in the Journal of Urology.
He was the first UK surgeon to be invited to join the faculty of the European Robotic Urology Symposium, and the first urological surgeon from the UK to be invited to join the faculty of international experts at the World Robotic Symposium.
Passionate about developing the level of care in this field, Mr Odgen is a respected trainer in minimally invasive transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) and continues to carry out research in the field alongside his private practice. He has presented multiple papers, including Transperineal Laser Ablation (TPLA) of the prostate and Transperineal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy using the DaVinci Xi surgical system.
