A new first for HCA UK: Percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation

As many as 30% of men and 40% of women live with a variety of urological symptoms and conditions, including overactive bladder. HCA Healthcare UK is proud to announce that we have started offering patients an innovative urological procedure to combat overactive bladder and voiding dysfunction, where the patient can experience difficulty passing urine.

Minimally invasive, percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) procedure involves having a very narrow needle inserted just above the ankle. Here, the posterior tibial nerve is stimulated for around 30 minutes, with the electrical current set on the highest level depending on the individual patient’s tolerance level. We recommend one 30-minute session a week for 12 weeks, as noticeable symptom improvement normally occurs after six weeks. Stimulation of this nerve can help with many urinary problems without the side effects of many medications, or the complications of invasive surgery.

Consultant urological surgeon, Mr Nicholas Faure Walker, performed this at The Prostate Centre at HCA UK’s Harley Street Outpatients at 18 Devonshire Street, London, W1G 7AQ.
