Why would I need a Heart Health Check?

The HCA UK Heart Health Check service gives you peace of mind by identifying and lowering your risk of serious conditions, including coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure and stroke.

Many of these conditions can go undiagnosed, but the complications that arise from them are preventable. Getting checked out – even if you don’t have any symptoms – can be a literal life saver.

These statistics from the British Heart Foundation highlight how common these conditions are in the UK:

Almost a third of all UK adults are estimated to have high blood pressure. Half of those are undiagnosed and so not receiving treatment

  • 7.6 million people (more than one in 10) are diagnosed with a heart or circulatory disease. Many others remain undiagnosed
  • Early deaths from heart disease have risen to a 14-year high, making it one of the leading causes of death
  • Around 100,000 hospital admissions each year are due to heart attacks – that’s one every five minutes – with many patients having had no prior symptoms
  • People with heart failure are two to three times more likely to have a stroke, but 40% are diagnosed late.

More than 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Estimates suggest at least 270,000 people over the age of 65 live with the condition undiagnosed

What does it involve?

Risks and symptoms vary from person to person. That’s why our Heart Health Check gives you a comprehensive, personalised review of your personal heart health including more than 30 speciality blood tests, imaging and heart rhythm analysis, plus a 30-minute consultation with one of our expert cardiologists.

They'll assess your results and create a personalised plan for improving your heart health, factoring in risks which could stop you from living the life you want. Your plan may include further diagnostic tests, heart-healthy lifestyle changes and, if necessary, a fast track to state-of-the-art treatment.

Who is the heart check for?

The Heart Health Check offers peace of mind for anyone wanting a complete picture, whether yourself or a loved one or a loved one.

The risk from many heart conditions increases with:

  • Age (routine checks are recommended for anyone over 40)
  • A family history of heart conditions
  • Other conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and inflammation
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity and inactivity

Our Heart Health Check will help you understand your risk and give you a plan to control it, and live with confidence.

What types of heart tests will I have?

The Heart Health Check includes 35 lab tests, plus scans and analysis to give you a full picture of your heart health. They'll all be completed within a single appointment and explained in detail by your expert consultant.

They are:

  • Specialty heart risk biomarkers such as lipoprotein(a)
  • Thyroid health
  • Cholesterol levels including HDL ratios, LDL ratios and triglycerides
  • Inflammation biomarkers in the body
  • Kidney health and uric acid
  • Liver and bile duct health
  • Full blood count: red and white blood cells, iron, platelets, blood oxygen and anaemia
  • Short-term and long-term blood sugar levels
  • Bone health
  • Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and calcium

These tests can help identify other conditions which are risk factors for heart disease, including kidney, liver and bone disease, diabetes and thyroid disorders.

You'll also have:

  • An echocardiogram private heart scan to assess its structure and function
  • An ECG to check for an abnormal rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • A score to assess your future heart and stroke risk based on your age, sex, blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking status
