Revision ACL reconstruction
Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
Several factors contribute to successful ACL reconstruction, failure of one of these can result in the need for revision
About revision ACL reconstruction
You might need to undergo revision ligament reconstruction in your knee for a number of reasons. This includes infection, incorrect positioning of the graft at the time of the first procedure, injuring the graft through a trauma or your body rejecting the implanted graft (like in organ transplants).

What happens icon plus
Your consultant will first remove the previous tendon graft, prepare the joint and then implant a new graft, which is usually taken from the tissues around your knee. The tendon graft is held in place to your thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) by screws that will be carefully inserted.
Screws from the first graft might need to be removed to enable the correct placement of the new screws. In this case the holes will be filled with bone graft. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and will take around two hours. -

Your consultant will tell you how best to prepare for this procedure. -
Afterwards icon plus
You will be sent to the recovery room after the surgery has been completed. On returning to your ward, a nurse will check your dressings, the small tubes in the back of your hand and catheter (if you have one). If you are experiencing pain around the incision area you will be given painkillers to immediately combat this. You will need to begin a programme of physiotherapy to aid your rehabilitation.
