What is a myomectomy?
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus.
Drug treatments for fibroids have traditionally been of limited value due to their temporary effects and unwanted side effects. Derivatives of the progesterone hormone (called progestins) are sometimes used to control the bleeding symptoms that some fibroids may cause, but they do not reduce the size of fibroids.
Removal of fibroids is offered where medication has been ineffective and symptoms such as pain, discomfort and heavy menstrual bleeding can be relieved by an operation.
It may be considered as an alternative to a hysterectomy, unlike a hysterectomy, a myomectomy removes your fibroids but leaves your uterus intact.
Need to know
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will remove the fibroids from your uterus through a cut made along the bikini line, or from your belly button to your bikini line. A plastic tube will be used to drain the blood from your pelvis if necessary.
Both the urinary catheter and the plastic tube will be left in place for 24 to 48 hours. The cut will then be closed with stitches or clips and the wound covered with a sterile dressing. The duration of the operation depends on the number and size of the fibroids to be removed, but it usually takes between one and two hours.
Your consultant will assess that you are well enough to undergo the procedure. In addition we recommend that you:
- cut down or give up smoking
- maintain a healthy diet
- maintain some form of exercise if you can
- try to lose weight if you are overweight.
You may be given an injection or some medicine to shrink the fibroids before your surgery. Your consultant will discuss this with you in more detail.
Your stay in hospital should last from between one to three days after your operation. You can usually return to normal activities within six to eight weeks, depending on your recovery. Your consultant will discuss this with you before the procedure.
