About physio after a hip arthroscopy

hip arthroscopy is a surgical procedure to evaluate and treat hip conditions such as acetabular labral tears and arthritis. The procedure takes around 45-60 minutes and is done under general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep. Alongside surgery, consultants often recommend physiotherapy to help with your recovery.

Need to know

When you have arthroscopy surgery to treat hip conditions, physiotherapy can be an effective treatment to help with your recovery and rehabilitation.

Our physiotherapists use the latest techniques and equipment to help you make the best recovery, improve your strength and reduce your risk of injuries.

They will assess your muscle strength, joint flexibility, posture, movement and coordination and use this information to decide on the best course of treatment. It could involve hands-on mobilisation a technique to help stiffness, pain and restore movement- and massage techniques. They will also show you exercises to do at home.
When you are preparing for hip arthroscopy surgery, your consultant will talk to you about how physiotherapy can benefit your recovery following the procedure. Many people start therapy immediately after surgery; however this may need to be delayed if the procedure was more complex.

Your physiotherapist will devise a bespoke treatment plan. Their first priority will be to relieve the pain and inflammation caused by surgery. Next, they will look to improve movement in your hip and provide strengthening exercises.
Our specialist surgeons work closely with our physiotherapists to ensure they deliver the best combination of treatment for your needs. Your consultant is available to answer any questions or concerns you have.

You'll often have a course of physiotherapy treatment sessions and your progress will be reviewed at each one to make sure you're heading in the right direction. Your physiotherapist will show you how to exercises in the comfort of your own home to ensure you are carrying these out safely and correctly.
