Your guide to hip conditions and treatment

The hip is one of the most stressed joints in our body because it’s in constant use. Whether we're walking, sitting or driving, the hip is key to movement and support. As soon as your hip joint starts to stiffen or cause pain, the natural reaction is to avoid using it as much, however, the hip becomes weaker through lack of movement. As the hip joint deteriorates the rest of your body load is often transferred to the lower back, knee and other hip - which helps to explain why you may be feeling pain in these areas too.

Common hip conditions

Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a condition where the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) of the hip joint don't form properly. The socket is usually too shallow and the ball isn't held tightly in place, so the hip joint is less stable.

Hip arthritis

A common condition of the hip which affects men and women of all ages.

Tendonitis

Identifying possible causes of tendonitis and providing treatment options.

Common hip treatments

Hip Arthroscopy

This minimally invasive procedure offers an alternative to open techniques and can evaluate hip conditions such as labral tears, arthritis and chondral injuries.

Hip replacement surgery

An operation to replace a worn or damaged hip joint with an artificial one. Hip replacement surgery can bring you great relief from chronic hip pain and improve your mobility and quality of life.

Hip impingement surgery

Hip impingement surgery reshapes the bones of the hip joint to correct abnormal bone contact and reduce cartilage damage.
