PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION
Physiotherapy is a vital part of rehabilitation for physical problems caused by neurological conditions and injuries.
If you have experienced damage to your brain, spinal column or nerves due to illness or injury, neuro physio will be part of your neurological rehabilitation programme. The aim is to manage muscle contraction (spasticity), improve strength, co-ordination, balance and your ability to control movements in your body.
Your therapy might include manipulation, a hands-on technique aimed at addressing stiffness, pain and restoring normal, pain-free movement, as well as massage. It will also involve physical exercises (sometimes involving special equipment) and breathing exercises.
Neurology is a specialist branch of medicine, which focuses on the nervous system. Neurological disorders can limit your body’s ability to function correctly, causing symptoms that range from headaches or memory loss to a lack of sensation or control of a limb.
That's why we take a multidisciplinary approach to care. Our neurologists work closely with a range of specialists - including physiotherapists - giving you personalised care, whatever your condition. Our consultants will help you prepare for physio and are available to answer any questions or concerns you have.
You'll usually have a course of physiotherapy treatment sessions, and your progress will be reviewed at each one to make sure you're heading in the right direction. Your physiotherapist will advise you on exercises you can do at home and ensure you know how to do them properly to achieve the benefits.
Additional types of therapy you may be offered include hydrotherapy in a special heated pool. We also offer specialist physio for children who are having neurological rehabilitation at The Portland Hospital.
