Physiotherapy for respiratory conditions

Physio to improve lung performance

HCA UK uses respiratory physio to diagnose and treat a range of lung and respiratory conditions.

Support to improve breathing techniques

Respiratory physio is used to treat a range of lung-related conditions, such as: asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and chest infections.

It can also help with breathing complications following chest trauma (such as broken ribs), respiratory, abdominal or cardiac surgery and allows you to manage your symptoms more effectively.

Need to know

  • What happens during your session? icon plus

Respiratory physiotherapy is carried out by a specially trained physiotherapist.

Your first appointment should take one hour, and your physiotherapist will start by asking you about your respiratory condition. They will then listen to your chest using a stethoscope to assess your breathing pattern.

You will be invited for a series of follow-up appointments, which will be half-an-hour long. As treatment progresses, your physiotherapist will manually apply various chest clearance techniques, and also perform therapeutic exercise techniques to help you better manage your breathing. They may also offer advice on breathing exercises you can do at home.
  • How to prepare icon plus

No special preparation is usually required before respiratory physio and you can continue to eat and drink beforehand.
  • After your physio session icon plus

After the respiratory physio has finished you will be able to go home the same day and you shouldn’t experience any side effects.
