What is lower limb ischaemia?
Lower limb ischaemia is a restriction of the blood supply to your tissues, causing a shortage of oxygen that is needed for cellular metabolism.
This is the process that keeps tissue alive. It usually occurs in the foot or leg and can be very serious if not treated early.

What are the symptoms? icon plus
Symptoms may include:
- The affected limb appearing pink or red
- Muscle pain on walking
- In severe chases, paralysis (loss of muscle function)

Diagnosing lower limb ischaemia icon plus
Your consultant will speak to you about symptoms, take your medical history and undertake a physical examination of the affected limb.
They may also request the following tests:
- Blood tests
- Ultrasound scan, to check your arterial flow

Potential treatment options icon plus
Treatment options include:
- Injection of an anticoagulant to stop the blood from clotting
- Amputation. This is only considered in a small number of chronic cases.
