What happens icon plus
This is an endoscopic procedure, often known as keyhole surgery. It's a minimally invasive technique that's carried out through a cut the size of a needle puncture, usually using local anaesthetic and sedation. In this type of operation, your consultant will use an endoscope, an operating microscope, together with specialised instruments to either repair or remove the damaged disc tissue. The procedure normally lasts around an hour. You shouldn't need any stitches. -
How to prepare icon plus
Your consultant will discuss your options and help decide the best type of procedure for you. As with any procedure, there may be some risks or side effects involved. Your consultant can discuss these with you beforehand. -
Afterwards icon plus
You would usually expect to stay in hospital overnight following this type of procedure, though you may be able to return home the same day. Your consultant will encourage you to walk around as soon as possible after your operation and may recommend a course of physiotherapy to improve your mobility. They'll also let you know how to care for your back while it heals. You may feel discomfort in your back for a few days, and it may take several weeks for your spine to recover fully, and it's important to avoid heavy lifting or twisting movements. You should expect to be off work for two to six weeks, depending on how physical it is.
