What is neurophysiology?

Neurophysiology is the study of the electrical signals of the nervous system. Detecting unusual signals can reveal the cause of an underlying neurological problem. Our experienced neurophysiologists deliver a range of tests to examine the electrical signals sent by your brain to control the movement and function of your body — from your ears and eyes to your hands and feet. These include nerve conduction tests (NCT) and electromyograms (EMG), which stimulate the nerves and muscles in parts of your body to see if they're working correctly.

Neurophysiologists also interpret Electroencephalogram EEG, known as brain wave tests, which are used to help diagnose seizures and epilepsy. In addition to diagnostic testing, our highly specialised physiologists support our surgeons by monitoring the function of nerve signals during delicate operations.

Our neurophysiology expertise

Our advanced diagnostic facilities enable us to test for a range of neurological disorders and offer ongoing monitoring to support your treatment.

Need to know

An EEG is a painless test to record the electrical activity in your brain and help pinpoint the source of symptoms like seizures or memory loss. It's commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions including epilepsy, dementia, sleep disorders and brain tumours or trauma.

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness. You may fall asleep at inappropriate times, including while talking, working or even driving. The multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) can be done as part of a sleep study in hospital and can confirm a diagnosis of narcolepsy.

If you're in a profession where it's essential to stay alert and awake for safety — such as drivers or pilots — you may have a maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) to assess your suitability. MWTs may also be recommended to see how well you're responding to treatment for a sleep disorder.

If you're experiencing problems with your sleeping habits, including chronic insomnia, daytime sleepiness, sleep walking or sleep-related breathing difficulties, your consultant might recommend an overnight sleep study. The main test used to analyse your brain and body as you sleep is a PSG.

Electromyography (EMG) is a neurophysiology test used to measure and record electrical activity in the muscle when both relaxed and contracted. It can be used to detect symptoms of the following: carpal tunnel syndrome ulnar neuropathy nerve injuries peripheral neuropathy Guillain-Barre...
