Mr Ahmed is a consultant in upper gastrointestinal surgery specialising in weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) and minimally invasive surgery. He is a lead bariatric surgeon at Imperial weight centre. His main areas of expertise are in the fields of laparoscopic (keyhole) and weight loss surgery. Mr Ahmed will provide you with a friendly and honest opinion regarding your suitability for surgery, putting your safety and wellbeing as the first priority. He pays particular attention to pre and postoperative care in order to optimize the outcome of your operation and provide you with a smooth recovery after surgery. He has also perfected the minilap technique offering minimal scarring (almost scarless surgery).
Mr Ahmed has >99% success in achieving a complete laparoscopic result without converting to open surgery. In the field of obesity surgery, he has performed over 5,000 laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including over 2500 gastric bypasses. His main areas of interest are in complex revisional bariatric surgeries and he receives referrals from all over the UK and abroad for his expert skills. He has trained in general and upper GI surgery in the UK and at Stanford University and the University of Rochester in the US. He trains other surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery and is on the faculty on numerous courses on bariatric surgery. Mr Ahmed is often consulted by other professionals and medicolegal experts for his opinions on complex bariatric surgery cases. He is also actively involved in bariatric surgery research having undertaken a PhD degree in mechanisms of complications of gastric bypass surgery at Imperial College London. He is a clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London and has numerous publications in leading medical journals.
Mr Ahmed's Imperial Weight Centre bariatric surgery unit in London has been designated as an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery and Mr Ahmed now sits on the prestigious International Bariatric Surgery Review Committee (IBSRC), comprised of top bariatric surgeons from around the world who evaluate bariatric surgery units worldwide for 'Centre of excellence' status. Mr Ahmed was elected to sit on council of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and also sits on council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
