About
Miss Sarah Muirhead-Allwood is an internationally renowned consultant orthopaedic surgeon, and, with over 30 years’ experience, is one of the most experienced surgeons carrying out hip replacement procedures in the UK. She is one of the world’s pioneers of hip revision surgery and alternate approaches to hip replacement, including the two-incision approach and OCM direct anterior approach.
Miss Muirhead-Allwood is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society, International Hip Society, European Hip Society, Royal Society of Medicine and Royal College of Surgeons. In 2021 she was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Robert Jones Lectureship and medal for her contribution to hip surgery.
Miss Muirhead-Allwood has published multiple peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and has also presented at national and international conferences. Throughout her career she has been active in developing new techniques and prostheses with major orthopaedic manufacturers and university departments. Since leaving the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where she collaborated with the biomedical engineering department at University College London to develop uncemented joints and ceramic bearings, Miss Muirhead-Allwood has continued her research into hip surgery, working most recently with Professor Jonathan Jeffers at the mechanical engineering department at Imperial College London.
She specialises in hip revision and hip replacement for all arthritic hip conditions and hip developmental problems, including avascular necrosis. As a surgeon who works with adults of all ages, Miss Muirhead-Allwood continues to perform hip resurfacing, which is thought to be an excellent treatment for many young and active patients.
Miss Muirhead-Allwood, in a desire to improve patient outcomes, established The London Hip Unit 20 years ago. It now has a worldwide reputation for clinical excellence as one of the UK’s only dedicated private facilities for the specialist treatment and care of adults with hip problems.
