Dr Nigel Hacking trained at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School and qualified in 1980. He took up a consulatnt position at Southampton University Hospitals in 1991 where he developed many new Interventional Radiology procedures including TIPS, percutaneous metallic bilary stenting and various forms of liver embolisation and Chemo-embolisation. He was one of the pioneers in Uterine Fibroid Embolisation and from 1998 set up fibroid embolisation services, first in the Caribbean, based in Trinidad and then in Kenya, based at the Aga Khan University Hospital. Dr Hacking was the first UK based Interventional Radiologist, or image guided surgeon to perform Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE) and after a successful pilot study in 2011-2012 he, along with NICE and the the Presidents of both the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) and the British Society of Interventional Radiologists (BSIR) set up the first multi centre study of PAE in the world. The UK-ROPE registry has been widely aclaimed and has lead to the adoption of PAE in the UK, both within the NHS and the private sector. Dr Hacking has performed the largest number of PAE procedures in the UK (over 300 and over 100 privately) and as the Clinical Lead for UK-ROPE is widely acknowleged at the leading proponent in the UK. From August 2018 he has commenced a service at the Wellington Hospital. He strongly believes in patient choice and the team approach. All his patients will have been investigated by an Urologist to exclude malignancy and other causes of their Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms.
