Kamal's background
Dr Kamal Ahmed was fully trained in all aspects of renal medicine including dialysis and transplantation at the Royal Free Hospital London. In the early part of his career he was heavily involved in quality initiatives, European dialysis and transplantation audits, and carried out original research in renal metabolic bone disorders leading to multiple original publications.
In 1986 he joined the London Bridge Hospital as a Consultant Renal Physician to provide leadership for the renal programme. He established the renal unit with a multidisciplinary team which has been renowned nationally and internationally for the management of end stage renal failure with dialysis and transplantation. In the 80’s he developed a special interest in renal vascular disease, intensive care nephrology and the management of high risk renal transplant patients.
In 1999, in addition to his clinical role, he was appointed as Director of Clinical Standards at London Bridge Hospital. He set up the framework for clinical governance and provided leadership for clinical standards to ensure safety of practice across the complex and multiple specialities of the hospital. Since 2009 he has held the role of the Medical Director of the Hospital and had a key role in progressing the clinical governance structure and setting up the hospital Board. He has in the last 10 years supported the HCA UK Division sitting on various committees and since 2012, taken on the role of Medical Appraisal Lead for HCA UK. Since November 2017 he has, in addition, taken on the role of the Divisional Medical Director for Governance at HCA UK, providing a key support role for the Chief Medical Officer and the Responsible Officer.
