Dr Michael Michell

Transparency under the CMA Order 2014

All private healthcare operators are required under the Competition and Markets Authority Order 2014 (“The CMA Order”) to be transparent about the relationship between their doctor and the private healthcare operator. Therefore, prospective patients should be aware that (in addition to being permitted to consult with and to treat patients at our facilities) this doctor also has an advisory role with HCA UK and is paid by HCA UK for this advisory role. We describe the nature of the role below, and we indicate how much the doctor has been paid for performing the role since 1 January 2023

Dr Michell provides medical advisory services for HCA’s The Princess Grace Hospital in relation to breast screening and diagnostic services, in line with current practice and undertakes the role of lead breast radiologist.

In his role he is responsible for protocols, including MDT terms of reference, as agreed and implemented in accordance with national guidelines including British Society of Breast Radiology (formerly RCR Breast Group), NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), and for monitoring and reporting compliance. Dr Michell provides support and guidance for the multidisciplinary programme management, provides assistance in the administration and support of the MDT in conjunction with HCA Staff including documenting decisions about diagnosis and referral for treatment and outcomes and ensuring the information is available within the HCA medical record.

In addition he also assists in the development of quality assurance processes, standards and outcome measures for HCA including quality and effectiveness of breast screening and diagnostic services, management of clinical issues identified through quality assurance processes and research opportunities.

Dr Michell is an active member of the HCA Breast Board, the HCA Imaging Board, lead for Breast Radiology & contributes to the production of the annual breast data report.

HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care. All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. In 2023 the total paid for these services was £14,448.

If a doctor provides HCA UK with medical advisory services and also practises in the NHS, HCA UK requires that doctor to attest that he/she is not compromising his/her NHS commitments in so doing.
