What is a sleeve gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that involves removing up to 80% of the stomach and leaving behind a thin tube (or sleeve) that can only hold 50-100ML of fluid.

As a result, your appetite should be more controlled as cells which produce hunger inducing hormones are removed and the volume of food that can be eaten is reduced.

Need to know

Sleeve gastrectomy is effective at helping patients with diabetes, high BMI and high blood pressure to manage their conditions. Before surgery, your GP or consultant will take the time to discuss your options with you and talk to you about what to expect during the procedure.

Sleeve gastrectomy is carried out under general anaesthetic and is not reversible. It is performed by either open or keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery.

During sleeve gastrectomy, your surgeon will make several cuts in your abdomen and use surgical instruments to remove part of your stomach. The tube shaped stomach that is left will be sealed with stitches or staples.
Sleeve gastrectomy is generally very safe. However, as with any surgery, there are some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you and answer any questions you might have.

After sleeve gastrectomy, the areas will be closed with stitches or staples.

Your consultant will let you know in advance how long to avoid eating and drinking before your surgery.
After the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery unit, where our dedicated team will look after you. You may feel a bit sore and have some bruising. You will be given pain relief medication if needed.

You'll need to have a catheter after surgery so you can empty your bladder easily. Until you can eat normally, you'll get the nutrients you need through a small tube in one of your veins or your bowel.

You may be able to go home after two days. Your consultant or specialist nurse will let you know when you can leave the hospital. You will be advised on how to manage your recovery and when you can get back to your daily routines.
