What is shoulder resurfacing?

This surgical procedure can be done when arthritis has affected your shoulder, causing pain and stiffness. The aim of the procedure is to replace only the damaged joint surfaces, rather than the whole shoulder joint.

Need to know

This operation is carried out either under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic (you'll be awake but pain is blocked in the area). If you're having a local anaesthetic, you'll also be given a sedative to help you relax. The operation takes about two hours.
Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you and let you know how the operation will be carried out. They'll be able to answer any questions you might have. If you're having a general anaesthetic, they'll let you know how long to avoid eating and drinking beforehand.

You'll be cared for in hospital for about three days following your operation. One of our physiotherapists will give you some exercises to help with your recovery and you may need to have outpatient physiotherapy until you have improved the range of movement in your shoulder. You will need to wear a sling for several weeks to rest your arm and shoulder.

Your physiotherapist will show you how to take your sling off and on to complete your exercises. Your consultant will let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including going back to work, exercise and driving. Depending on your job, you may need several weeks off work.
