What are nasal polyps?
Nasal polyps are swellings on the lining of the nose. They may cause a reduced sense of smell and sinus infections.
Your HCA UK ENT consultant can remove these polyps by carrying out surgery called a nasal polypectomy. This surgery is a minimally invasive procedure.
Need to know
A nasal polypectomy removes small swellings, or polyps, from the lining of the nose. As surgery is performed through the nose it doesn't require any cuts. The polyps are usually removed using small surgical graspers, while you are under a general anaesthetic. Immediately after removing the polyps your surgeon will pack your nose to manage any bleeding.
Your surgeon will explain to you how you should prepare for your procedure.
You will normally be asked not to eat or drink in the hours leading up to your nasal polypectomy.

You should be able to go home the same day, but be prepared to spend a night in hospital.
You should not drive after your procedure, so you will need to arrange someone to collect you from hospital. You will require at least two days off work, although most people take one week off work to recover.
For the first month after the operation, you should use salt water to rinse your nose. Your consultant will tell you if you need antibiotics or other nose sprays.
