RESTORING HAIR

There are many options for treating baldness or hair thinning but only a hair transplant can permanently restore hair

Treatment for hair loss

We all lose hair naturally, on a daily basis. Hair thinning (alopecia) can lead to baldness when this natural loss exceeds hair growth and a hair transplant can help restore natural hair growth.

A hair transplant is a kind of microsurgery that can take up to an hour, depending on the scale of the procedure.

Need to know

You'll have a local anaesthetic injection in your scalp to numb the area and block any pain. Your consultant will then remove a very narrow strip of your hair-bearing scalp from the donor area on your head (usually the back or sides). Using a piece of equipment called a Binocular Stereoscopic Dissecting Microscope, this piece of your scalp is then divided into tiny follicular units.

Each follicular unit has up to four strands of hair on it. These units are then placed into the thinning or balding areas of your head. This is to mirror nature's random follicular grouping and create a natural look - to blend in perfectly with your existing hair.

Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.

You should be able to go home the same day as your hair transplant. You might feel some pain and discomfort on your scalp so your consultant might prescribe pain relief for you to take for a few days after your procedure.

You might have some scabs and swelling on your scalp where the hair was transplanted and where your donor patch of scalp was removed. These can take up to a week to heal properly. Your consultant will let you know how to care for your scalp following your procedure. They'll also let you know when you can get back to your usual routine.
